What is it

HEPA Filtration System

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter is a high-performance air filter designed to remove very fine particles from air. They are designed to remove ≥ 99.97% of particles ≥ 0.3 microns including Dust, Pollen, Smoke and Bacteria.

HEPA filters don't work like simple sieves, instead they use three mechanisms:

  1. Impaction: Large particles crash into fibers and stick
  2. Interception: Medium particles follow airflow but touch fibers and get trapped
  3. Diffusion: Very tiny particles move randomly (Brownian motion) and collide with fibers

This combination is why HEPA filters are so effective—even for very small particles.

Common Applications

HEPA filters are used to remove hazardous particles, toxic dust, and in areas where contamination must be minimized. They are commonly used in:

  • Final Filtration after dust collectors
  • High-end Ventilation Systems
  • Industrial applications handling hazardous dust
  • Hospitals & Health Care Centers
  • Clean rooms
  • Bio Safety Cabinets & Research Labs
  • Air Purifiers

Operating Principle

How HEPA After-Filters Work

HEPA filtration uses three physical capture mechanisms acting simultaneously on sub-micron particles — impaction, interception and diffusion — achieving extraordinary efficiency without moving parts.

01
Pre-filtered air enters the after-filter housing
Air that has already passed through a primary dust collector enters the HEPA after-filter housing. A pre-filter stage (G4 or F7 class) removes coarser particles first, extending HEPA media life.
02
Air passes through pleated HEPA media
The airstream flows through densely pleated borosilicate glass fibre or synthetic HEPA media. The pleating maximises surface area, reducing pressure drop while maintaining high velocity capture.
03
Impaction captures large sub-micron particles
Larger sub-micron particles (above ~1 micron) travelling with sufficient inertia cannot follow airstream curves around fibres and impact directly into the filter media where they are trapped.
04
Interception catches mid-range particles
Particles in the 0.1–1 micron range that follow airstream paths come close enough to fibre surfaces to physically contact and adhere to them through Van der Waals forces.
05
Diffusion traps ultra-fine particles
The smallest particles (below 0.1 micron) move erratically due to Brownian motion, causing them to contact and adhere to fibres. This is why HEPA efficiency actually increases for the very smallest particles.
06
Clean air discharged or recirculated
Ultra-clean air exits the HEPA unit at ≥99.97% efficiency. Differential pressure monitoring indicates filter loading — when threshold is reached, the filter element is replaced and safely disposed of.
